The most important thing is to let people know that it is not acceptable to deliberately ignore Michigan's votes. In a democracy, national leaders must be chosen by the entire nation. Primary elections are a core part of our political system, and excluding voters from the primary process weakens our democracy.
First, please consider signing the petition, which asks the Democratic party to fix the situation and vow never to do this again.
Second, please consider telling your friends about this site and this issue. Many people I have talked to are not well-informed about this issue.
Third, and most important, please let people in the Democratic party know your thoughts on the issue!
Currently, there is a movement underway to hold a new primary that is acceptable to the Democratic Party. In order for that to happen, it needs to be approved by all of these people. It's a long list, and the most important people to contact first are your representatives in the Michigan legislature. Also, if you supported or donated to any of the people or groups on this list, your comments will be especially meaningful to them.
- Your Representative in the Michigan House of Representatives. They will have to pass legislation to create a new primary.
- Your Michigan state senator. They will also have to pass legislation to create a new primary.
- Governor Granholm. She will have to sign the legislation creating a new primary into law.
- Hillary Clinton. The plan will probably not be accepted if her campaign doesn't sign off on it.
- Barack Obama. The plan will probably not be accepted if his campaign doesn't sign off on it, and news outlets are reporting that they are a bit reluctant.
- Michigan Democratic Party. They will need to accept a new primary as the way to choose Michigan's delegation to the Democratic Convention.
- Democratic National Committee. They will need to adjust their rules and remove the sanctions against Michigan.
- Negotiations for this deal are being headed by US Sen. Carl Levin, US Rep. Carolyn Kilpatrick, United Auto Workers President Ron Gettelfinger and DNC Member Debbie Dingell.
